Who you are

You break the formality in a room within about four minutes, usually by saying out loud the thing everybody else was being careful about. People relax because you went first and made it cheap for them to follow. It is not a technique and you could not switch it off. You simply cannot sit in a careful room for long without doing something about it.

Once somebody is yours they stay yours, past the point of good sense and occasionally past the point of evidence. You defend people who are in the wrong and sort out the details afterwards. The bravery in that is real, and so is the cost: you have handed your welcome to plenty of people who never once handed anything back.

• First to open. You offer warmth before it is safe to, and that willingness has started nearly every good thing in your life.
• Fierce loyalty. Once you claim somebody you stay claimed, through their worst years and their least attractive behaviour.
• Ends the stiffness. You can turn a cautious gathering into a real one by refusing to pretend you are not glad to see people.

Loyalty left unsupervised becomes a hostage arrangement: you stay years past the ending, calling it devotion when it is mostly a refusal to admit in public that you picked wrong.

Notice who gives it back. Keep going first, since that is the best thing about you, and start counting the returns instead of the numbers. The size of your welcome was never evidence that you are loved by everybody in the room, and you have known that for a while.
