Who you are

You are where things begin in your family and you have never claimed it. Somebody had to be the first to leave, or to stay, or to break the pattern, or to say the thing out loud that everyone had agreed to leave alone. It was you. Twenty years on, half the people at the table are living inside a decision you made at twenty three.

You are constant in a way that is easy to overlook. Same phone calls, same visits, same person at every funeral and every hospital, for decades. And you filter what you pass on. You decide what one relative needs to hear about another, and how, and when, and you carry the rest yourself without ever telling anyone that you are doing it.
