Who you are

You explain things for a living whether or not it is your job. The relative filling in a form, the new starter on their first week, the friend halfway through a divorce who does not know what happens next. You go at their pace, you skip the part where you show off how much you know, and they come out the other side able to do it alone.

You take charge of situations you have no claim on and then hand them back. For a few hours you are the one who knows the route, and when it is done you do not stay to be thanked. Pressure makes you clearer rather than louder. In the worst hour of somebody's week you are the voice saying what happens next, and next, and next.

• Plain language. You can say a difficult thing once, in words the other person already owns.
• Authority handed back. You take the wheel when it is needed and give it up without a fuss.
• Steady in tight moments. The narrower the situation, the calmer your voice gets.

Your shadow

You explain when you should ask. Somebody wants to be heard and gets a clear account of their own situation instead, delivered slightly too soon. You can also become the permanent guide, keeping people mildly dependent because being needed is easier than being close. And you leave before the thanks, which looks like modesty and is partly a way of never being owed anything.

Teach people out of needing you. That is the whole job: get them through it once, then make sure they could do it again without your number in their phone. Learn to stay for the thank you as well. Being appreciated in person is not a debt, and refusing it keeps people at a distance.
