Who you are

Your real skill is imagining the stranger. Before you write the instruction, name the file, or explain the plan, you ask what somebody would call it while lost, tired, and in a hurry. That is not tidiness. It is a kind of hospitality done in advance, for a person you will never meet and who will never know you were there.

You are the second reader everyone needs and nobody budgets for. You find the sentence that could go two ways, the step that assumes knowledge, the joke that will land wrong with half the room. You test rather than declare. When you watch somebody reach for the wrong thing, you change what you wrote instead of explaining why they read it incorrectly.

Your gifts

• Stranger's eye. You can forget what you know and see a thing the way a newcomer sees it.
• Plain words under pressure. You find the simple term for the complicated idea, and the simple term turns out to be accurate.
• Improvement without credit. You make other people's work better in ways they benefit from and never have to thank you for.

Your shadow

Serving the reader is also a way of never being read. You are so practised at the useful position that people know what you organised and not what you think. And the anticipating gets compulsive. You draft how somebody might take it wrongly, then edit yourself down to whatever cannot be misunderstood, which is usually nothing worth saying.

Your soul work

Say one thing this year without building anybody a safe route into it first. Your care for how other people find their way is a real gift, and you are still allowed to be the thing being read rather than the sign pointing at it.
