Who you are

You are the person things get told to. A colleague's diagnosis, a friend's affair, the real reason your cousin left that job. None of it travels further, and none of it changes how you greet them on Monday. You did not train for this. You simply never developed the habit of trading information for closeness, and people worked that out about you early.

You pay for it in ways nobody sees, which is the point and also the problem. You carry other people's worst weeks in your jaw and your sleep, and every so often you have a flat mood that nobody can trace to anything. Arguments arrive at you loud and leave your hands reasonable. Whatever was bitter in them stopped with you, and you decided long ago that this was a fair trade.

Your gifts

• Nothing travels. What you are told in a bad hour is never used against anyone later, not even mid argument.
• Heat absorbed. Anger arrives at you and does not leave at the same temperature.
• The same face on Monday. Knowing somebody's worst thing does not change how you treat them.

Your shadow

A person who only receives eventually stops working. You take on so much that you become the sediment, and because you never showed the cost, nobody thinks to relieve you. There is pride in it too. Being the one who never leaks means never needing anybody, and that is a lonely thing to have made a virtue of.

Your soul work

Find the one person you tell things to. Not everything, just enough that you are not the only unopened room in your own life. What you carry for other people is good work, and it should not be the whole account of who you are.
