Who you are

You put your name behind people. The junior nobody listened to, the friend with the unlikely plan, the relative everyone had written off: you say plainly that they are worth backing, and you keep saying it in rooms where it costs you something. You are not naive about them. You have decided that most people rise to the level somebody believes in.

You build the conditions rather than the outcome. The introduction, the loan that was never mentioned again, the arrangement that let somebody go back to studying. You rarely take part in the success itself and do not expect to. You want their life to be good and not merely functional, and you notice details of it that nobody else bothers with.
