Who you are

You feel distances. The gap between what somebody said and what they meant, the space that opened between two friends in March, the small amount a marriage has moved since last year. Most people can only report that a room felt strange. You can say what changed, roughly when it changed, and how much of it is still recoverable if anybody acts.

You also know that some distance is necessary. You do not try to close every space between people, because you understand that anything held too tightly tears itself apart, and that a friendship with no room in it is not closeness, it is pressure. Knowing how much room is left is a job you have quietly held in several families.
