Who you are

You are the one who asks whether the passports are actually in the bag, in a tone suggesting that you would like to see them. Competent people forget things, and you worked that out early enough to build a life around it. Memory is confident and often wrong, so you put a hand on the object rather than trusting anybody's certainty, including your own.

What makes you good in a crisis is not that you are anxious. It is that you get procedural under pressure. Other people's voices climb and yours drops, and you start working through the order: this, then this, then the next thing. Whole rooms have steadied themselves on that voice without ever telling you afterwards that they did.

The habit can also become an alibi: everything was done correctly, so nothing that went wrong belongs to you.

Know which parts of your life are carrying passengers. Run the full check where the stakes are real, and walk into everything else with empty hands and no plan at all. The habit exists so that you can go places, not so that you can stand at the gate feeling prepared.
