Who you are

You are not the person shouting in the meeting. You are the one who read the policy, found the clause that made it enforceable, and changed that. Your resistance is unglamorous and extremely effective, and it is often finished before anyone realises there was a disagreement. Loud opposition looks like courage. You worked out early that it also warns the other side.

There is a stubbornness in you that people mistake for agreeableness. You will nod, go away, and simply not comply. You have your own account of what is right, arrived at privately, and no amount of institutional pressure has ever moved it very far. What you will not do is make a performance of it, because the attention was never the point for you.

• Effective dissent. You change the thing itself rather than the conversation about it.
• Independent judgement. Group agreement has almost no pull on what you actually think.
• Patience for the opening. You wait for the moment when a small push does the whole job.

Quiet refusal shades into contempt. You stop telling people you disagree and just work around them, which leaves them defending a position they might have dropped if asked. You start assuming everyone in authority is stupid, which costs you allies, and the habit of private resistance can outlive the thing worth resisting, until you are opposing out of temperament.

Your work is to say it out loud sometimes. Not everyone needs to be outmanoeuvred. Give people the chance to agree with you before you route around them, and check occasionally whether you are still resisting something real or simply refusing to be told.
