Who you are

You have sat up with a sick child, a frightened friend or a parent at the end, and you did not leave the room. Fear does not make you clumsy. It makes you precise. You notice the small change in breathing, the temperature, the thing that is slightly different from an hour ago, and you act on it before anyone else has looked up.

You do this without drama, which is why it is so easy to take for granted. There is no announcement, no account given later of how tired you were. You go back to work the next morning and nobody at the office knows anything happened. Devotion of this kind is unglamorous, entirely real, and almost never described out loud by the people who received it.

• Steadiness under dread. You function properly in the situations that make other capable people freeze or find a reason to leave.
