Who you are

You do not adjust. What you actually believe stays where it is regardless of the room, the audience or the money on the table, and people register that early, well before you have said anything substantial. It is not stubbornness exactly. You simply never learned to hold two versions of yourself at once, and at this point you would not know how to start.

You end up with an odd kind of authority for somebody who never raises their voice. In a room where everyone is adjusting, you are the fixed reading. You are also drawn to whatever sits underneath a conversation, so you are usually the one who names the actual problem while everybody else is politely working through the agenda.

Learn the difference between what is actually you and what is only an opinion you picked up somewhere. Defend the first without negotiation. Let the second be revised in public without treating it as a defeat. Changing your mind about a fact costs you nothing that matters, whatever it feels like at the time.
