Who you are

You are the one person in your family who will not join the rewrite. You remember which year the money ran out, who left the room, and what was said in the kitchen afterwards. That makes you useful and slightly uncomfortable to have around. People come to you when they want the version that has not been softened for company, and they do not always thank you for it.

You are also the one who shows up after the bad news, when the casseroles have stopped and the phone has gone quiet. Two months later is your hour. You sit with people in the flat, unphotogenic part of grief, and you do not need them to be better yet. Cancer gives you a long memory for who was kind, and a longer one for who vanished.

• Salvage. You find what is still good in a situation everyone else has written off, and you make it count.
• Accurate memory. You hold the details other people lose, and you produce them without exaggeration when they matter.
• Company in the low places. You stay past the point where sympathy usually runs out, and people remember that for life.

Accuracy can turn into a ledger. You keep count of who disappeared and who never asked, and you are always correct, which is exactly the problem. Nobody can apologise for something you have never mentioned. If you let the record sit there long enough, it stops being memory and becomes a quiet reason to expect very little from anyone.

You are here to tell the truth about what happened and then let people move. Keep the record, since somebody has to, but say the grievance out loud instead of filing it. Memory used well is a gift to a family. Memory used as evidence is only a slower kind of distance.
