Who you are

You repeat what was said to you when you were frightened, in more or less the same words, and it still works. Nobody in your family would describe you as impressive. They would say the house is calmer when you are in it. That is a strange thing to be good at and almost impossible to demonstrate, which is why it goes unnoticed for years.

You do not try to fix people, which is rarer than it sounds. When somebody is upset you stay, you make tea, you let the sentence trail off without filling it. Advice is what frightened people give. The Moon rules you and you understood, without being taught, that most distress wants company rather than a solution, and that leaving is the only real failure.

• Steady in the small hours. You are the one still awake and still calm when the difficult night is at its worst.
• Comfort without fixing. You can sit with somebody's distress and let it be distress, rather than rushing them out of it.
• Low volume, high authority. People listen to you precisely because you have never needed to compete for the room.

Being the calm one is a role, and roles get lonely. You soothe everyone and mention nothing, until the people who rely on you have genuinely no idea you have been struggling for months. When it finally comes out they are hurt, and you are quietly furious that nobody noticed, having spent years making certain nobody could.

Your work is to keep giving that steadiness and to stop being the only one exempt from it. Say the hard thing to one person this year, badly if necessary. Comfort you can only give and never receive is not humility. It is a wall with a kind face on it.
