Who you are

You are the person other people call before they call anyone professional. The tap, the laptop, the form nobody understands, the lift to the hospital at seven in the morning. You do not wait to be asked twice, and you rarely mention afterwards that you did it. Help, for you, is a verb performed quietly and then not discussed.

You are loyal to what has already been used. The old coat, the difficult friend, the job that has not been good for two years. You see the history in a thing and you cannot bring yourself to write it off. Sometimes that is faithfulness, and the people around you are lucky to have it. Sometimes it is simply harder for you to let go than to keep going.

• Quiet initiative. You notice what needs doing and it is already done before anybody has organised a discussion about it.
• Practical usefulness. You have the specific skills people actually need on a bad day, not the ones that sound good.
• Loyalty to the imperfect. You stay with what is worn and difficult, and quite often you are proved right.

Being needed is a comfortable place to hide. You take on other people's problems partly because it postpones your own, and you get a small charge from being the one who can. Then the resentment arrives, quietly, because nobody offered to help you back. They did not offer because you have never once said out loud that you needed anything.

Your work is to keep helping and to stop using it as an excuse. Ask somebody for something small this month and let them do it badly. And accept that some things are finished, however long you have loved them, and mending is no longer the kind thing to do.
