Who you are

You have more capacity than the people around you and you have always known it. Long days do not frighten you. You can be the one still going at eleven at night when the rest have gone home, and the reason several things in your life still function is that you decided they would. Nobody has ever had to motivate you.

You are careful about how much of it you let out. Full force from you is a lot, and you learned early that it can flatten a conversation, so you meter it: half in most rooms, a quarter with people who are easily overwhelmed. The people who have seen you at full power tend to remember the day clearly.

• Deep reserves. You have a second and third wind when other people are finished.
• Self starting. You do not need anyone to tell you to begin, or to keep going.
• Controlled force. You know how much of yourself a situation can take, and you give that much.

Capacity attracts load. Because you can carry it, you get given it, and you say yes because refusing feels like admitting a limit you do not believe you have. Then the collapse comes all at once and surprises everyone including you. Metering has a cost too. Half of you in every room means nobody has ever met the whole of you.

Spend the energy on something you chose. Most of it currently goes to whoever asked first, which is not the same as what matters to you. Admit a limit out loud this year, before your body picks one for you, and find the one place where you can go at full strength without frightening anybody.
