Who you are

Within an hour of walking into a group, you know who is carrying whom. Who is doing the work the others are taking credit for, who is quietly running out of patience, which two people have not spoken properly in months. It is not gossip. You are reading structure, and you can usually see it more clearly than the people standing inside it.

Then you act. An introduction here, a word in the right ear, a piece of credit steered towards the person it would help most. You do it sideways and you do it without telling anybody, which is generous and also means the people involved never got asked whether they wanted their situation improved by you. Most would have said yes. That is not quite the point.
