Who you are

You absorb things. Someone comes in shouting and by the end of the conversation the temperature has dropped, without you raising your voice once. Part of it is that you do not take the charge personally. Part of it is a decision you made at some point that whatever is happening will go better if one person in the room stays level.

This puts you in the middle of every difficult situation, the family argument, the workplace fallout, the friend group splitting into sides. You do not particularly enjoy it. But you can sit between two furious people and hear both without being recruited by either, and there are not many people alive who can manage that, and everybody around you knows who you are.

Your work is to have your own reaction, in the room, at the time. Say you are angry when you are. A steadiness that permits no disturbance is not peace, and the people who rely on your calm would survive finding out that you have weather too.
