Who you are

Your sense of responsibility extends past the people you know. The state of the local school, the way a process treats someone with no advocate, whether the system works for a person having their worst month. Most people feel that briefly and move on. You go to the meeting, read the document, and stay on the committee for six years, which is where the change actually lives.

There is nothing romantic about the work and you have no illusions about it. Progress arrives in small procedural pieces, usually years after the effort, often credited to somebody else entirely. You have made peace with that. What you want is for the arrangement to be better after you than it was before, and a surprising amount of the time you get it.

Your gifts

• Stamina for process. You stay inside the slow official work where things are genuinely decided.
• Concern beyond your circle. You act for people who will never know your name.
• Indifference to credit. You will let somebody else announce it if that gets it done.

Your shadow

Serving everyone can be a way of never being close to anyone. You give your best hours to the cause and your leftovers to the people at home, then defend it with the importance of the work. Righteousness creeps in too. You start measuring friends by their civic seriousness, and the private, unimprovable parts of life begin to feel like a distraction.

Your soul work

Your work is to bring the same care to the four or five people who actually live with you. The public good is not more real than a Sunday afternoon with your family. Serve something small and specific, on purpose, and let it count as much as the committee.
