Who you are

You settle terms early. Who is paying, who is driving, what happens if it runs over, when you need an answer by. People find this uncomfortably direct at first and then very restful, because nothing has to be guessed at afterwards. You are not being businesslike with your friends. You are removing the part of every arrangement where resentment usually gets in and makes a home.

You remember your side accurately, including the parts that do not suit you, and you assume the same of everybody else. That assumption is where the damage starts. Most people are vague rather than dishonest. They genuinely do not recall agreeing, and you hear the vagueness as a small theft, which it usually is not. You are rarely the one who forgets.

Your gifts

• Clear terms. You state what you are giving and what you need before the work starts, which prevents most of the arguments that follow.
• Accurate memory. You hold your half of an agreement exactly, including the inconvenient parts of it.
• Fair by default. People trust your division of anything, because you split as though you will be handed either half.

Your shadow

The instinct for clean terms curdles into keeping receipts. You stop asking for what you are owed and start recording it instead, and the record slowly turns into a case. By the time you present it you are not opening a conversation, you are delivering a verdict, and the other person cannot answer a charge they never knew was being built.

Your soul work

Keep your agreements alive rather than filed. When the terms stop fitting, say so early, while the change is still small and nobody is angry yet. A record only helps if the other person is allowed to read it and argue with what it says.
