Who you are

You show up on time and stay in position. When a friend takes a risk, you are the arrangement underneath it: the lift home, the money if it goes wrong, the phone answered at two in the morning. You read other people's timing well enough to know when to step in and when to leave them alone, and you are almost never early with the help.

Nobody applauds a fixed point. The role has a way of hardening around you, so that being dependable stops being something you offer and becomes what you are for. You go along with it, partly out of care and partly because being needed is a settled position, and settled positions rarely get questioned by the people who benefit from them.
