Who you are

Somebody in every family has to be the first one, and it has always been you. First to move away, change fields, leave the marriage, do the thing that was not done where you come from. It is lonelier than it looks from outside, because there was nobody ahead of you to ask, and you made the early mistakes with an audience watching.

What redeems the difficulty is what you do afterward. You come back and tell people the truth about it, including the parts that were worse than expected. You will take the phone call from the cousin considering the same leap and give them an hour of specifics. Half the people who followed you would not have gone without knowing the way was passable.
