Who you are

You go and check. While everyone else is repeating a story about what happened, you are the one reading the actual document, asking the person directly, or working out the numbers for yourself. It is unglamorous and it takes hours nobody thanks you for. It also means that when you say what happened, people can act on it without checking behind you.

This makes you unusually fair. An accurate account has no opinion about who deserved what, and you will report a fact that damages your own position without much visible pain.
