Who you are

You lost something early and made room out of it. The years that hollowed you out are the reason you can sit with somebody in the same situation and not flinch, not rush them, not offer anything stupid. People end up living in your life for a while: the friend between flats, the cousin who could not go home, the colleague who needed somewhere to be at Christmas.

Nobody you have taken in has ever been asked to be grateful. That is the part people remember. There is no ledger with you, no reminder later, no story told at a party about what you did for someone. You keep a long private record of the hard years, though, and you know exactly which ones they were, and you never mention that either.
