Who you are

You come alive with people watching. The idea you were half sure of at breakfast becomes, by the afternoon, something you can put across to fifty people so well that they remember it for years. You are not faking. The audience genuinely improves your thinking, and you have never quite trusted anything you worked out alone in a quiet room.

You also have reach. Things you say get repeated by people you have never met, in versions you would not recognise. That is the trade. Say something in public and you lose control of it immediately; it gets simplified, inverted, attached to somebody else. You have learned to mind less about that than most people would, which is probably why you keep doing it.

• Thinking in public. You work out what you believe in front of people, at speed, and it holds up.
• Reach. What you say travels further than you intend, through people you will never meet.
• Nerve. You will stand up and say the half formed thing while everyone else is still deciding.

Your shadow

Applause is a poor judge and you know it, which does not stop you checking. Without supervision you start choosing the line that lands over the line that is true, and the difference is only a few words wide. Nothing you say gets tested afterwards, because by then you are already somewhere else, saying the next thing to a fresher crowd.

Your soul work

Put some of it into a form that lasts. Your work is committing a fraction of what you produce to paper, where it can be judged coldly by strangers after the excitement has died down. The talent is real. It needs something slower attached to it.
