Who you are

Two languages, two families, two social classes, two countries: something in your life has always required translation. You can say the same thing in a formal register and a blunt one, and you know which room needs which. When two sides are talking past each other, you are the one who works out that they actually agree and are using different words.

It has cost you something. Being able to move between groups often means belonging completely to none of them, and you have had the experience of being slightly foreign in a room where everyone else was at home. That is where the skill came from. It is also why you are careful, sometimes too careful, about which version of yourself gets shown.

A lifetime of translating can leave you with no sentence of your own. You are so busy making each side comprehensible to the other that you never say what you think of either, and both sides assume you agree with them. When a real disagreement arrives, you have no practice at holding a position, only at explaining other people's.

Say one thing a day in your own register, untranslated, to somebody who can take it. The gift is real and the world needs it, but a person who only ever carries other people's meaning eventually forgets they had one of their own.
