Who you are

You give people the real figure. How long it will take, how much it will cost, how much of it they have got wrong so far. The comfort of a soft answer has never appealed to you, partly because somebody once lied to you kindly about something that mattered and you paid for that lie for years afterwards.

You are expansive and blunt in the same breath, which is a strange thing to be on the receiving end of. You will tell a friend her project needs another two years and then offer to spend them working on it beside her. The bluntness is not cruelty. You think people can carry the real distance if somebody tells them early enough.

Your gifts

• Honest measurement. You give people the actual number, which lets them plan instead of merely hope.
• Encouragement without lying. You can say the road is long and still leave somebody wanting to walk it.
• You stay for the duration. What you commit to, you are still doing years later, long after the enthusiasm has worn off.

Your shadow

Truth telling unsupervised turns into truth dumping. You deliver the hard figure to somebody who needed an hour of rest first, then feel wronged when they resent you for it. There is vanity in it as well. Being the only one willing to say it hardens into an identity, and you start hunting for illusions to puncture rather than work to do.

Your soul work

Learn the timing of a truth. The number is not the whole of your job. The person standing in front of you is the other half, and saying it gently does not make it one inch shorter or less true. Wait an hour when an hour is what somebody needs.
