Who you are

You are the one who asks the question that makes somebody else interesting. In meetings, at dinner, in the pub, you set the timing, hand over the moment, and keep your face neutral while it lands. The other person gets the credit and you get the thing you actually wanted, which is a conversation that went well and a friend who feels clever.

This is a real skill and it is also a hiding place. You stay a step behind your own opinions, wrapping them in questions so they can be dropped without cost if the room turns. People close to you eventually notice they have never heard you state a position flatly, and some of them stop asking, which is the outcome you were most afraid of.
