Who you are

You watch the level in things. Whether a group has spent more goodwill than it has generated, whether a friendship has been drawing down for two years without anybody putting something back, whether the household can survive another month like this one. Nobody else is measuring, so you do it, and then you adjust quietly to cover whatever the shortfall turns out to be.

You judge an arrangement by whether it could still be running in five years, which is why you are unimpressed by generosity that comes in one large burst and then stops. You would rather see a small amount returned steadily. Applied to your own life, the same standard says you are running low, and you have decided not to look at that number for now.
