Who you are

You hold things lightly. You can be completely attentive to a person for an hour, know exactly how they are, and then let them go off and live a life you have no say in. Most people cannot separate attention from possession. You worked out the difference early, probably by watching somebody get it badly wrong, and you built a way of loving people out of it.

Much of what you give is never returned, and you accept that. Every few years somebody rings out of nowhere to say a thing you said in 2011 changed how they handled something, and that one call justifies a decade of unnoticed effort. This is your particular faith: do the small careful thing repeatedly and trust the record is kept somewhere out of your sight.

Meanwhile you keep a private list of every early morning nobody noticed. Left alone, the gift becomes a life that handled a thousand people and kept none of the warmth.

Some things are yours to keep. The work is learning which, and staying long enough to find out, rather than letting go on schedule because letting go is what you are good at. Hold one thing past the point where you would usually release it.
