Who you are

You close things deliberately. When something in your life stops, you want it stopped properly: the last conversation had, the account settled, a note made of what actually happened while it is still fresh. You have no patience for the half finished ending, the project walked away from mid sentence, the friendship left out in the weather to fade on its own.

You are unusual in that you do this for the sake of whatever comes next rather than for your own comfort. Endings you handle stay intact. Years later somebody can come back to what happened and understand it, including you, which is why people who have fallen out with everybody else can still ring you and get an honest answer.

• Endings that protect. What you close stays whole, so it can be opened again later without anybody having to guess.
• Honest notes. You write down what happened while it is fresh, including the parts that ruin your own version of it.
• Nothing left open. You will not walk off and leave something unfinished, even when walking off would be entirely justified.

Closing turns into concealing. You end things that were still going somewhere, calling it protection, because an unresolved situation makes you anxious and a finished one is easier to explain to people. You also bury some things so thoroughly that nobody, yourself included, could find them again: the argument sealed over, the grief written up neatly and never once reread.

Close what you close for whoever comes after you, and leave the way back marked. Tell somebody where the difficult thing is buried. Some of it you will want to reopen in ten years, older and better equipped, and you will be glad you did not simply cover it over and walk away.
