Who you are

You arrive in the middle of a fight and the volume drops. This is your function in most groups you join, and it takes a nerve people rarely credit you for. The middle is the only ground both sides can reach and the only ground neither one will defend, and you stand on it anyway, usually without anybody having asked you to.

You are trusted because you carry a message intact. You can put one side's case to the other without flinching and without adding your own opinion, including the parts that make your own friends wince. The temptation is always to soften it. You know the exact moment when softening turns into telling both parties something slightly untrue.

Your gifts

• Nerve in the middle. You will stand between two furious people, which most will not do even once.
• Faithful carrying. You repeat a position accurately, including the parts you personally disagree with.
• Disarming calm. People lower their guard around you because the calm is genuine rather than a technique.

Your shadow

Quiet becomes the only outcome you can tolerate. You will broker a peace nobody believes in just to stop the noise, then call the silence progress. In the middle you stay unreadable, so your own position never has to be defended by anybody, including you. And you resent both sides for a safety you keep providing and never ask for.

Your soul work

Keep walking into the middle, because rooms with nobody in the middle end badly. But hold out for an agreement with terms in it rather than quiet, and say what you want out of the settlement. You are allowed to be one of the parties.
