Who you are

You know what you saw. In the half second before anybody protests, you have already decided which version is true, and you say it, and you do not enjoy saying it. You do it because a group with nobody willing to be accurate is not a kinder group. It is just a group where the loudest person in it wins every single time.

You separate the judgement from the person, which is rarer than it sounds and costs more than people think. You have been shouted at for being right. You have watched somebody you love come off worse in a call you made against them, and you kept the friendship by never once pretending afterwards that you had seen it differently.

• Immovable under noise. Volume does not change what you saw, and everybody learns that eventually.
