Who you are

You hold the whereabouts of things. Which folder, which conversation it came up in, what was agreed and by whom and on what date. It is not memory, it is a habit you built and then fed for years. An untracked thing bothers you the way an open door bothers other people, and you will get up at eleven at night to close it.

Whole families and whole teams run on the fact that you never let the record drift. You are the one with the receipt, the photograph, the exact spelling of the street. People treat this as a quirk until the afternoon they need it, and then you are the only version of the past that survived. You do not do it to be needed. You do it because blurring bothers you.

• Built, not remembered. You never trusted your own head, so you made something better and it holds.

Teach the system to somebody else. Your work is not to be indispensable, it is to make what you know public and then survive being replaceable. Throw the dead entries out too. What you stop keeping is as much a decision as what you keep.
