Who you are

For a family, a team or a group of friends, you were the original: the one everybody else got measured against, usually without anybody saying so out loud. You gave people a way of standing, a tone for difficult conversations, a method they still use. Years later you hear your own phrasing come back from somebody who has forgotten where they got it.

You expect any plan to lose something between the idea and the delivery, so you build it generous at the start and it usually survives contact. You hand over the method instead of hoarding it, which is why the people around you can work perfectly well without you in the room, and why they sometimes forget to mention that you taught them.

Your gifts

• Sets the form. You establish how a thing is done, and the standard holds long after you have left.
• Builds in the loss. You expect a plan to shrink between idea and delivery, so you make it generous at the start.
• Hands over the method. You give people the way you did it instead of keeping it, and they can work without you.

Your shadow

A shape that will not be altered stops everything around it. You hold a form past its usefulness and call that integrity, and you feel every small deviation as a personal edit. There is a loneliness in it too. Being the one everybody copies means being handled and then put back, and you have gone years without anybody asking what made you.

Your soul work

Let the form be revised. Give people something true to work from and then allow them to build something you would never have designed yourself. Keep the standards that actually carry weight, release the ones that are only preference, and let somebody take your measure kindly for once.
