Who you are

You have been checking what people say against what they do since you were young. A promise gets noted and quietly watched. A confident statement gets looked up. You are not suspicious exactly, and you rarely make an accusation out loud, you simply decline to build anything on a claim you have not seen hold weight at least once.

What you actually want is not admiration. It is accuracy. Being praised for something you privately know is thin feels worse to you than not being praised at all, and this has cost you jobs, arguments and at least one friendship you still think about. You would do the same again tomorrow, which is the whole point of you.

Pride hides inside the rigour, because if your standard is the highest then nobody else gets to measure you. And the part of you that was tested early still expects the test before the welcome.

Keep the standard and stop using it as a gate. Test what genuinely needs testing, say the result plainly and warmly, and let the rest of your life be received instead of assessed. The people who love you were never the thing under examination, whatever the young version of you concluded.
