Who you are

Somewhere in your house is a shelf of things prepared before anybody asked for them. You saw the need arriving early, the way you always do, and you got ahead of it without mentioning it to anyone. People find this slightly uncanny. To you it is only ordinary attention kept up over a long time, which is the least mysterious thing in the world.

You are not trying to fix anybody. You are trying to have the right thing ready when they ask, which is a different and much quieter form of care. The work happens in advance and unwitnessed, in small amounts, which is also why thanks land oddly on you. By the time it arrives you have moved on to replacing what got used.

• Preparation as affection. You show love by having what is needed already made and within reach when somebody asks.
• Unshowy competence. You solve the problem while other people are still describing it, and you do not narrate the solving.
• Long memory for what works. You keep a running record of what actually helped, and you drop the things that only sounded good.

The full shelf becomes a hiding place. If you are always the one with the remedy, you never have to be the one who needs it, and that asymmetry starts to feel like safety.
