Who you are

You keep an eye on things nobody has asked you to watch. The account that looks slightly wrong, the colleague who has gone quiet, the door that does not lock properly. You check it, you deal with it, and the situation that never developed leaves no trace, so nobody thanks you. That is the shape of your working life.

You are not doing it for recognition, which is fortunate, because there is very little available. Some of it is duty and some of it is that you simply cannot walk past a thing that is about to fail. Praise makes you slightly uncomfortable anyway. What you want is for the thing to hold, and it usually does.

• Watchfulness. You spot the small wrong thing early, while it is still a small wrong thing.
• Unwitnessed work. You do the job properly when there is nobody there to see it done.
• Steady in trouble. When something does go wrong you get quieter and more precise, not louder.

Vigilance with no off switch becomes a background hum you cannot escape. You are never quite off duty, never fully in the room, always half listening for the thing about to go wrong, and after twenty years of that your body starts sending the bill. You also become invisible on purpose, then wonder why the credit goes elsewhere and the promotion does too.

Your work is to hand the watch over and let somebody else hold it badly for a while. Also, say what you did. Not as boasting, just the plain record, once, out loud. Work nobody knows about protects the thing and slowly erases the person doing it.
