Who you are

You turn up. Not occasionally, not when it suits you, but every time, for years, in weather and moods that would give anybody else a decent excuse. The people who depend on you have stopped noticing, which is the strange reward for absolute consistency. They only find out what you were doing when you are ill for a fortnight and everything quietly falls over.

You are comfortable being invisible, which sets you apart from most people who work that hard. You are not building a case to present later. You genuinely do not want the meeting where somebody thanks you in front of everyone. What you do want, and rarely say, is for one person to understand accurately how much of it there has been.

• Unbroken consistency. You have never let the thing you are responsible for go uncovered, not once, not even when it was fair to.
• Discretion. You know a great deal about people and you keep almost all of it to yourself.
• Comfort with the invisible. You can do good work with no audience and not lose interest in it.

Endurance becomes identity, and then you cannot stop. You take on more because you can, refuse help because it would be quicker to do it yourself, and end up genuinely irreplaceable, which is a trap rather than a compliment. Underneath the modesty there is a running total, and the year it comes out it will sound much more bitter than you intend.

You are here to be dependable and to train somebody to cover you. Teach one person to do what you do, then take the week off and let them. Work nobody else can perform is not devotion. It is a structure that fails the moment you do.
