Who you are

You get involved. The stranger on the pavement, the argument at the next table, the colleague nobody is speaking to: you go over. Most people run through the reasons not to, and by then the moment is gone. You have a shorter gap between noticing and acting than almost anyone you know, and it has occasionally put you somewhere you should not have been.

Your kindness has an edge to it. You will tell a friend their relationship is not working, or that the drinking has become a problem, and you will do it to their face rather than around them. You accept that this costs you people occasionally. You would rather be the friend who said it than the one who was very sympathetic afterwards.

• Nerve under pressure. You act while other people are still deciding whether it is any of their business.
• Honest kindness. You will cause somebody brief discomfort to spare them a much longer one.
• Follow through. You come back the next week to see how it went, which is the part almost nobody does.

Certainty is the risk. You are confident you can see what somebody needs, and sometimes you cannot, and you go in anyway because doing nothing feels worse to you than being wrong. You also overreach. Taking on strangers is easier than sitting with the difficult situation at home, which has been waiting patiently for your attention for about three years.

Your work is to keep stopping, and to ask before you fix. One question changes an intrusion into help. Then turn the same nerve towards your own house, where the conversation you keep not having is the one that would actually change something.
