Who you are

You are the pause between one part of life and the next. People come to you straight from the argument, the hospital, the shift that went badly, and they say the raw version to you first so that they can say the calm version to everyone else. You do not repeat any of it. You are the room before the room.

You belong properly to two worlds and fully to neither. The family you came from and the life you built. The job you trained for and the one you ended up doing. The country of your childhood and the one on your documents. You move between them without effort and notice, at about two in the morning sometimes, that you are a guest in both.

• Decompression. People arrive at you wound up and leave able to face the rest of their day.
• Two vocabularies. You can say the same true thing in the words each side actually uses.
• Warm limits. You can say what you will not do without the other person feeling pushed away.

Your shadow

Standing in the middle is lonely and you have made it a personality. Everyone passes through and nobody stays, and you tell yourself that is the job. You also absorb what people leave with you. Other households' arguments live in your chest for weeks, and because you never chose a side, you never got to put any of it down either.

Your soul work

Belong somewhere on purpose. Pick one of your worlds and be a member of it rather than a visitor, even though choosing costs you the view from the middle. Keep doing the between work for other people. Just make sure there is one place where you arrive and are not passing through.
