Who you are

You were the strong one before anyone asked whether you wanted to be. Probably at about eleven, when something happened at home and you decided to be the person who did not fall apart. It worked. Thirty years later people still bring you the bad news first, and you still take it standing up, and nobody checks afterwards how you are.

You can tell within a minute who in a room is the most exposed. The new person, the one whose marriage is failing, the child nobody is watching. You put yourself between them and whatever is coming, quietly, usually by changing the subject or standing in a slightly different place. Almost nobody has ever noticed you doing it.
