Who you are

You are drawn to big plans and you are better at the ground underneath them. Somebody has to know how much money is left, who is not well enough to go, what happens if the first week fails. You do that without being asked, and you do it early, at the point where saying the difficult thing is still useful rather than at the crisis.

People trust you with arrangements because you tell them the hard part at the start. You are the friend who asks how the rent gets paid in month four, not to spoil it but because you have watched enthusiasm run out before, including your own. You want the thing to work, and you would rather be tedious in March than sorry in August.

• Realism without cynicism. You can love an ambitious plan and still count out loud what it is going to take.

Support becomes a hiding place. You get so good at making other people's attempts possible that you live permanently at the edge of your own, packing their bags, telling yourself your turn comes next year. Then the bluntness sours into commentary, and you criticise the people out there trying while calling your own caution hard won wisdom.

Put your name on something. Hand the arrangements to somebody else, go and do the thing you have been enabling for years, and do it badly if badly is the only way you will do it at all. Preparation is not a life. It is a doorway you have been standing in.
