Who you are

People arrive at you confused and leave able to say what they think, and you barely spoke. You asked something small, then you waited, and you did not rescue them from the pause. Most people cannot do this. They interrupt, or they offer a solution, or they get uncomfortable at thirty seconds. You can wait four minutes and it costs you nothing.

You notice the things that make a room easier and you do them without mentioning it. The chair moved so the newcomer is not stranded. The subject changed before somebody had to lie. The phone call made on a Tuesday because you remembered what that Tuesday was. None of it is strategy. You simply find other people's discomfort physically hard to sit next to.

• Quiet by design. You bring the temperature down instead of raising your voice, and it works more often.
• Better questions. You get further with one honest question than most people manage with an argument.
• Timing. You know when somebody needs company and when they need to be left completely alone.
