Before a tree grows upward, it grows downward. My grandfather taught me that on his farm outside Varanasi, and he was talking about mangoes, but he might as well have been teaching the first chakra. Muladhara, the root, sits at the base of the spine in the yogic map of the body, and it governs the most unglamorous things a human needs: safety, shelter, food, belonging, the simple animal confidence that the ground will hold.
Every tradition I have studied agrees on this much, whatever vocabulary it uses: a person who does not feel safe cannot easily pray, love, create, or grow. The roof must hold before the upper rooms matter.
What the Root Governs
In the classical picture, Muladhara is drawn as a four petalled red lotus and associated with the element of earth. Its concerns are foundational:
- Physical safety and the feeling of being provided for
- The body itself: its solidity, its health, its right to take up space
- Belonging: family, home, the tribe that claims you
- Trust that existence is fundamentally survivable
Signs the Root Needs Tending
The tradition speaks of an unbalanced root; a modern counsellor might speak of chronic insecurity. The signs they describe are strikingly similar. A person living in survival mode: anxious about money even when the account is full, unable to relax in their own home, hoarding or clinging, treating every change as a threat. Or the opposite drift: ungrounded, floating, unable to commit to a place, a person, a routine.
I felt this in my own first years in Delhi, far from the lane I grew up in. I had a job, a flat, and no roots, and my prayers in that season were as restless as my sleep. What healed it was not more philosophy. It was cooking my mother's dal in my own kitchen, learning my neighbours' names, walking the same park daily until it knew me. Root work is humble work.
You cannot meditate your way out of a foundation problem. The root is healed at ground level: body, home, bread, belonging.
Practices That Ground
The traditional and the practical agree here. Walk barefoot where you safely can. Eat real meals at regular hours, seated. Tend something living, a plant will do. Keep one corner of your home genuinely in order. Move your body in ways that make it feel strong rather than punished. And do the adult work the root respects most: face the money, the lease, the unresolved practical fears, because the root chakra speaks the language of handled business.
Where This Really Comes From
I honour this system enough to tell you its true story. The chakras come from the tantric traditions of medieval India, where different texts described different numbers of centres, five in some, six, seven, even more. The version the whole world now knows, exactly seven chakras in rainbow colours with one psychological theme each, took its shape much later, filtered through Theosophist writers in the early twentieth century and coloured in, quite literally, by Western authors within living memory.
Does this trouble me, a man who learned the names from his own tradition? Not at all. Maps of the inner life are always drawn and redrawn; what matters is whether the territory is real. And the territory here is real: there is a part of every human life concerned with ground, safety, and belonging, and it sits at the base of everything else. Call it Muladhara, call it your foundation. Tend it first.
