Who you are

You have been through enough difficult processes to know that the direct route is usually the one that breaks people. So you take the longer line. You tell someone the next step rather than the whole distance, you slow down where they need you to, and you stay honest about how far there still is to go. Nobody arrives with you feeling humiliated.

You are not doing it for them, which is the part that matters. You will not take over, even when taking over would be quicker, because the point is for them to manage it again without you. People remember this years later. Not the advice specifically, but the fact that you never once made them feel stupid for not knowing something.

Your gifts

• Honest pacing. You tell people the true length of a hard road and then walk it at their speed.
• No condescension. You explain without ever making someone feel small for asking.
• Handing over. You teach people to manage without you, deliberately.

Your shadow

Guiding becomes managing. You start deciding what other people can handle and editing what they hear, which is a small theft even when it is kind. You collect dependents rather than graduates, because being the one who knows the way is a role you enjoy more than you admit. And you stay in that position partly to avoid ever needing one yourself.

Your soul work

Your work is to let people take routes you would not have chosen. Give them the whole picture and then let go of the outcome. And find somebody further along than you are, and be the beginner for a while. It will improve everything you teach.
