Who you are

Every group you have belonged to had somebody doing the parts nobody volunteers for. The accounts, the rota, the follow-up emails, the chairs put back at the end. That was you, and it was you again at the next place. You do not do it for thanks; you do it because you cannot stand watching something good fall apart for want of ordinary effort.

You care about whether a thing will hold. Other people are interested in how it looks on the day; you are thinking about what happens in year three, when the enthusiasm has gone and only the arrangements are left. This is not pessimism. It is the reason several things in your life are still standing that everybody assumed would run themselves.

Your gifts

• Endurance in the unglamorous part. You keep going through the stretch of work that has no story attached to it.
• Loyal instinct. You commit to a group and then behave as though its survival is personally your problem.
• Structural care. You think about whether something will still be working long after the people who started it have left.

Your shadow

Anonymity can curdle. You chose the background, then find yourself resentful when somebody less capable is praised for the thing you held together, and you say nothing, which guarantees it happens again. There is also a kind of safety in it. As long as your name is not on anything, nobody can examine whether your own ambitions ever went anywhere.

Your soul work

Your work is to keep making things that hold, and to be visible about it once in a while. Say what you did, plainly, in a room where it counts. Modesty is honourable. Disappearing so completely that nobody can find you is a different thing entirely.
