Who you are

You arrive after the event, when the interesting part is over and most people have gone home. The failed project, the marriage in its last month, the friend everybody quietly stopped ringing: you turn up there, without ceremony, and you stay long enough to find what is still worth having. You have been doing some version of this since you were a child.

Aftermath does not frighten you. Where other people need a situation to be fresh and promising before they will touch it, you are drawn to the end of things, partly because that is where the truth finally gets said out loud. It is not glamorous work and nobody watches you do it, and you have never needed anybody to.

Your gifts

• Late arrival, full hands. You find something worth keeping in situations other people wrote off, and you are rarely wrong about it.
• Not embarrassed by the mess. Grief, failure and the wreckage afterwards do not send you looking for the door.
• Patience with small returns. You will take a little today and a little tomorrow rather than demanding all of it at once.

Your shadow

You can start preferring wreckage to ordinary company. A finished situation asks nothing of you, and a person in the worst month of their life will never ask you to be happy, so you keep choosing the aftermath over a normal afternoon. There is pride buried in it too, the belief that nobody else would have bothered to come at all.

Your soul work

Bring what you find back to people who are living. The point of going in after the collapse is not to prove that everybody else gave up too early. The point is that something gets saved and used. Let some of it feed you, and count yourself among the living while you are there.
