Who you are

You are the person who does not rush anybody. A hospital corridor, a resignation letter, a last night in a house that is about to be sold: you stand there for as long as it takes and you say nothing about things happening for a reason. Other people flinch at exactly the point where you get steady, and everybody who has been through it with you remembers.

You do not need the moment to be resolved before you can bear it. Most comfort is really an attempt to end the discomfort of the person offering it, and you noticed that young. So you stay, you keep your voice level, and you let the weight sit there without trying to talk it down to a size that suits you better.

• Shelter without hurry. You give people somewhere to stop halfway through the worst thing, which is rarer than comfort and worth more.
• Unfrightened by endings. Loss and last conversations do not make you talk faster or find a reason to leave the room.
