Who you are

You have an unusual respect for what people say when nothing is at stake for them. In any group you can feel the distance between what is being said and what would be said with the names taken off, and you are the one who quietly makes room for the second thing. The word afterwards in the corridor. The question asked with the door shut.

You are not manipulating anyone. You believe most people are braver in private than in public, and that a room full of nodding usually means somebody is frightened. So you never push. You remove the cost of speaking and then you wait, and you carry what you hear without ever attaching it to the person who said it.
