Who you are

You end up in the middle. The divorcing friends, the two departments, the business partners who stopped speaking: somehow you are the one both sides trust, in a situation where they trust nobody. It works because you genuinely have not picked a side, and because you have never leaked a position in order to buy goodwill with the person in front of you.

This is harder than anyone watching realises. Both sides will try to recruit you, usually by explaining that the other one is unreasonable, and both will be partly right. You sit in the middle of that pressure without cracking, and you refuse the first person who tries to use you loudly enough that the second one hears about it beforehand.

• Even handed under pressure. You can hold something valuable for two people who hate each other and hand it back intact.
• Conditions stated plainly. You say what has to be true before you will move, and you do not shift the line when somebody pushes.
